Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in worrying about the future. After watching a silly romance movie and spending some time with my budget, I found myself in that precise predicament this weekend.

The downward spiral ensued.

It’s weird how your mind can start with just one small negative thought and have it manifest itself into total destruction. And so quickly, too! It’s actually quite impressive, despite how much it sucks.

To turn things around, I decided to give gratitude a try.

There are lots of ways to practice gratitude: writing in a journal, praying, sending thank-you notes, sharing around the dinner table. No matter how you go about it, gratitude is definitely key to living a happy life.

To bring myself back into the Now instead of stressing over whether I’ll have money for Christmas presents (or rent), and how long I’m going to have to spend alone, I thought about all of the things I am thankful for. Like, right now, in this moment.

Here’s what I came up with:

  • I am alive.
  • My rent is paid up for the month. I have electricity, clean drinking water, and some food in my fridge.
  • Someone, somewhere, is probably thinking about me.
  • I have friends & family that love me.
  • My legs are sore. This is because I am able-bodied, and had the opportunity to do an incredible outdoor adventure yesterday for work.
  • I have a car and some gas in my tank.
  • I have clean sheets on my bed.
  • I have wine.
  • I can afford a coffee tomorrow.
  • I live in a world with Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

I am so glad that this method of dealing with negativity and anxiety has been added to my Life Skills Toolbox. It totally helped me get a grip and realize how incredibly blessed and fortunate I am.

I hope you can find something to be grateful for today, my darlings.
